A fistula is a surgically created connection between an artery and a vein, used for hemodialysis treatment.
This connection allows blood to flow to the dialysis machine at a sufficient rate for effective cleaning.
It is generally referred to as an arteriovenous (AV) fistula.
Most commonly created in the arm or forearm (for example, between the radial artery and the cephalic vein).
It is the most durable vascular access.
It carries the lowest risk of infection.
It provides strong blood flow, ensuring efficient dialysis.
The fistula usually matures within 4–8 weeks before it can be used.
