Fistula 1

Definition:


A fistula is a surgically created connection between an artery and a vein, used for hemodialysis treatment.

Purpose:


This connection allows blood to flow to the dialysis machine at a sufficient rate for effective cleaning.

Type:


It is generally referred to as an arteriovenous (AV) fistula.

Application Site:


Most commonly created in the arm or forearm (for example, between the radial artery and the cephalic vein).

Advantages:


  • It is the most durable vascular access.

  • It carries the lowest risk of infection.

  • It provides strong blood flow, ensuring efficient dialysis.

Maturation Time:


The fistula usually matures within 4–8 weeks before it can be used.
